Rogersons in Parish Registers

Updated October 6th 2000

My ROGERSONs were in Crofts Bank & Dumplington, near Stretford. St Catherine's Church in Dumplington didn't open until the 1830s so I have to investigate the neighbouring parishes of Eccles and Flixton. Starting with ECCLES parish, I am noting all ROGERSON family members.

Please let me know if this has been useful to you! Also please do check original sources, I may have missed some names or mistranscribed something...

Transcribed so far:

Baptisms

February 3

[illegible] [illegible] Daughter of Betty Rennocks, of Eccles, Reputed Father [illegible] [illegible]rson, late of Manchester, Weaver

assume Bastard (this is the only reason words are ever underlined in these records) also due to mother listed with Reputed Father. Possible a Rogerson, I haven't found any other names ending in rson in this record set.

February 10

[R]obert Rogerson of Barton, Weaver, by Ellen his Wife

hard to read this entry - lots of mildew on the record and it's not a great filming!

June 16

Thomas, Son of William Rogerson, of Swinton, Weaver, by Mary his Wife.

apparently buried August 18 1801

October 27

James, son of James Rogerson, of Croftsbank, Weaver, by Ann his Wife

Apparently buried February 23 1800 - Otherwise this one might have been mine - per 1881 census, great x4-grandad James was born 1801 in Dumplington.

March 26

William Rogerson and Mary Morton, by Banns

[start of section 2 of Microfilm roll]

1800

January 12 James, Son of William Rogerson, of Croftsbank, Basket Maker, by Amelia his Wife

Another possibility for great x4-grandad James (born 1801 in Dumplington.)

more on this couple later!!

Baptisms

February 28 William, Son of William Rogerson, of Croft, Basketmaker, by Amy his Wife
June 27 James, Son of Thomas Rogerson, of Barton, [illegible - possibly Weaver], by Martha his Wife

Another possibility for great x4-grandad James (born 1801 in Dumplington.)

December 19

Martha, Daughter of Adam Rogerson, of Croftsbank, Basket-Maker, by Mary his Wife

recognise these names? No marriage found - possibly in Flixton.

Burials

January 14 Mary Wife of William Rogerson of Swinton

March 2

[illegible - could be Jak? Joh? Jas?] Son of James Rogerson, of Croft

November 23 Mary Daughter of Thomas Rogerson of Flixon

Baptisms

March (19?)

Hannah, Daughter of Thomas Rogerson, of Barton, Weaver, by Hannah his Wife

apparently buried 25th February 1805

March 6

Alice, Daughter of Thomas Rogerson, of Croftsbank, Husbandman, by Sarah his Wife

This seems like a good find as my James became a cow leech (animal doctor) which I assume is what Husbandman also means

March [illegible]

Mary, Daughter of John [R]ogerson, of Croftsbank, Husbandman, by Ellen his Wife

Rogerson could be Jogerson but doesn't seem likely! Another Husbandman for the list.

Marriages

January 18 William Rogerson & Maria Burkett. by Banns.
February 21

Thomas Rogerson & Sarah Bithell [Bethells?] by Banns

Wonder whether this is Thomas & Sarah whose daughter Alice was born on March 6th...

Burials

December 21 Mary Daughter of James Rogerson of Croftsbank
  [end of section 3]
[start of section 4 of Microfilm roll]

1804

Baptisms
November 15 Ad[illegible] [illegible] Adam Rogerson, of Croft, Farmer, by Mary his Wife.
Burials
November 15

Adam Rogerson, of Croft

With no father or other details specified, the implication is that this is the father and not the new child Ad[illegible]. So did dad's death send mum into labour? Or is this an inconsistent transcription & did the child die?

1805

During 1805, the format of the register changes from the horrible (large old books - easy for viewing, hard to view on Microfilm) to single page volumes, one for each year. A resounding cheer went up from me.

Baptisms
February 13

Thomas, Son of William Rogerson, of Swinton, Weaver, by Maria, his Wife

apparently died the same day

February 25

[illegible] [...]mas Rogerson, of Barton, Weaver, by Hannah his Wife

February 1805 was not a good month for Rogerson babies. Presumably this is Hannah Daughter of Thomas Rogerson, died 25th February 1805.

April 21 Mary Ann, Daughter of Thomas Rogerson, of Croftsbank, Weaver, by Sarah his Wife.
September 29 Mary, Bastard Daughter of Ann Rogerson, of Barton. Reputed Father John Gooden of Barton, Hatter.

July 25 John Rogerson, of Croft.

1806

John, Son of William Rogerson, of Croftsbank, Basket Maker, by Amy his Wife.

lots of baptisms on April 6, then none until April 20.

Marriages
October 3 James Rogerson & Phoebe Taylor by Licence.
[start of section 5 of Microfilm roll]

1809

1809's register has severe water damage, so much so that it is carded on the front of the volume. Many illegible records, I may even have missed some Rogersons.
From this year, events are numbered in the register eg birth no 27, death no 73 etc.

Baptisms
February 12 Elizabeth Daughter of John Rogerson of Pendleton Weaver by Alice [illegible]
March 26 Thomas, Son of Thomas Rogerson of Barton, Weaver, by [illegible] his Wife.
April 30 Stephen. Bastard Son of [Worrel] of [illegible]. Reputed Father John Rogerson, Barton, Weaver.

May [illegible] [illegible] Irving and Sarah Rogerson by Banns
Burials
January [obscured] William Son of John Rogerson of Pendleton
August [illegible] Mary Daughter of Peter Rogerson, of Manchester (no 246)

1810

Baptisms
March 18

Edward Son of William Rogerson of Croftsbank, Basketmaker, by Ann / mah his Wife

The / is where it is carried over to a new line (or rather to the end of the next line which is completed.). Don't know what the mah is for. Later, this register omits "his Wife" where the line is already full.

May 20 James Son of John Rogerson of Barton, Weaver, by Sarah his Wife
July 1 Ellen, Daughter of Thomas Rogerson of Urmston, Weaver, by Sarah his Wife.
July 1 James Rogerson, Bastard Son of Mary Wilcock of Croftsbank, reputed father John Rogerson of Croftsbank, Basket Maker.
Burials
January 2[7?] Joseph Son of Jane Rogerson. (No 25)

1811

This volume a bit damaged; writing is very small (half the previous line spacing )

Marriages
May 12 John Rogerson and Martha Brown, by Banns. (No 70)

1812

Baptisms
February 2

Mary Daughter of Robert Rogerson of Barton Weaver by Ellen his Wife

apparently died 22nd October 1812

February 9 Mary-Ann Daughter of William Rogerson of Croftsbank, Basket-maker, by Amy his Wife
March 8 Mary Daughter of Joseph Rogerson, of Dumplinton, Weaver, by Mary
June 3 Mary Daughter of John Rogerson of Croftsbank, Basketmaker, by Mary.
Burials
January 1

"A man found frozen to death upon the high-road at Barton upon Irwell, and supposed to be of the name of Owen Hughes by a mark in his hat."

not a Rogerson but interesting enough to rate a mention

March 26 Catharine Rogerson of Manchester
July 21 Hannah Daughter of John Rogerson of Pendleton
July 26 Robert Son of Robert Rogerson of Barton.

October 22

Mary Daughter of Robert Rogerson of Barton.

1813

Hooray! We are into printed sheets! The Good side of this is that there is just one clearly marked column to scan for 'Rogerson'. Also you get slightly more details: age at death and witnesses to the marriage (inc whether the witnesses, bride &/or groom could write). The Bad side is that the little comments about Bastards and who their Reputed Fathers are no longer appear. Let's hope John Rogerson has finished sowing his wild oats.
